Intermedia Studies (2022–ongoing)
I.
Intermedia compositions (digital and analog photography, paint, found materials, drawing, and collaged and handwritten text)
Alongside my formal projects, I keep an ongoing intermedia practice that serves as a field for experimentation. Here I test the questions that run through all of my work, such as the idealized and the actual, interior and exterior, mediated and unmediated, and analog and digital, without the stakes of a finished series. I group these pieces by form and theme instead of by place or date, which lets me challenge how I perceive time, space, and memory.
My compositions make static photography feel dynamic and lived in. I print images and rescan them, paint over prints, tear them apart and piece them back together, and cut and paste them into notebooks. I draw texture from found objects, maps, and thrifted books, add my own drawings, and caption with vintage magazine lettering and my own handwriting. On screen, I overlay images and dissolve them into one another with Illustrator’s blending modes.
II.
Video journals (edited still photography layered over unfiltered video)
My video journals work as field notes. Each one captures an expedition by layering still photographs, which I idealize through my viewfinder and refine in Lightroom and Illustrator, over unfiltered moving-image sequences shot on site. Set against each other, the two registers render both the interiority and the exteriority of an encounter with the more-than-human.
