Ecological Grief

In Joanna Macy’s meditation “Finding a Listening Post in Nature,” we are invited to identify a place where we feel deeply connected to the web of life and to receive guidance through the simple act of listening.

But what happens when these sacred places—once sources of profound connection—become sites of environmental degradation?

In Ecological Grief, I explore the complex interplay between beauty and pain. This collection features original photographs from my experiences, juxtaposed with versions altered by fire.

Through an appreciation of the intrinsic value of place and a reflection on the losses these locations have already endured—or are likely to face in the near future—I seek to convey my personal process of grappling with ecological grief.
